King of Hollywood: a Hollywood satire made on a music video budget

In 2006 we produced King of Hollywood, a dark, stylized satire of Hollywood’s underworld directed by Danny Lee and starring Jacky Jasper as himself, with Peter Greene, Ike Turner, Glenn Plummer, Federico Castelluccio, Todd Bridges, Bishop Don Magic Juan and Angelyne. Darrick co-wrote it and executive produced it with Sean Merrick.

The brief

A film shot inside a music video production

  • Produced by Angelone and AONE
  • Directed by Danny Lee
  • Executive producers: Darrick Angelone and Sean Merrick
  • More like this: Film marketing

King of Hollywood follows a street hustler through a day in Hollywood’s underworld, the part of town under the red carpet. Jacky Jasper plays himself, and the screenplay, written by Danny Lee with Jasper and Darrick, draws on his own life.

The money came from the video budget for Jasper’s album Street Money. Each day the crew spent about an hour on his music videos, then moved on to scenes for the film, so one budget paid for both.

What we did

Writing, producing and the cast

  • Writing

    The screenplay

Darrick co-wrote the script with the director, Danny Lee, and Jacky Jasper.

  • Producing

    Five days, all on location

We produced the shoot over five straight days at real Hollywood locations, on the schedule and budget of a music video.

  • Cast

    Names audiences already knew

Around Jasper, the cast brought together Peter Greene, Ike Turner, Glenn Plummer, Federico Castelluccio, Todd Bridges, Bishop Don Magic Juan and Angelyne.

  • Music videos

    Shot alongside the film

The same production shot Jasper’s music videos. Mad Game shares its cars, sets and locations with the film.

  • Trailer

    Cut for DVD in 2006

The trailer on the watch page comes from the 2006 trailer DVD.

  • Press

    BPM magazine

What it led to

One budget, two productions

  • 5 daysOf shooting, all at real Hollywood locations
  • 7Known names in the cast around Jacky Jasper
  • 1 budgetFor the film and Jasper’s music videos

King of Hollywood started AONE’s work in film and video. The video for Mad Game followed in 2007, and in 2008 we came up with Hollywood Street King for Jacky Jasper and ran its technology and advertising revenue until 2016.

On set

Hollywood as the set

The film was shot where it is set: on Hollywood streets, in its clubs and parking lots, and in a silver Bentley that carries the story from scene to scene.

What it taught us

Make one budget do two jobs

Shooting the music videos and the film on the same days, with the same crew and locations, turned one budget into two productions. We plan release campaigns the same way: shoot once, then cut for every channel.
